Has anyone had any luck with these?...

We've got a set, but putting them in the flame just seems to heat them up,
silently. My fingers get warm, and then I get nervous, so I remove them
from the flame after several seconds. Should I be listening for a soft
sound, or will it give me a definite tone? Do I just need to be brave and
leave them in the flame longer? Thanks!
Fire good? Fire bad?
