Back when I was learning about magnets I read a passage in a book
about demagnetizing large objects. The details are sketchy but in general
it does take high current, and it may also take several passes through the
coil, or several cycles if you use the method described by Andy. The
problem (if I recall correctly) is that the demagnetizing field does not
penetrate thicker metals...
