It's the gas model.
Frank Oppenheimer had it in the physics lab at Boulder CO
Students would photograph the tracks of the white superballs using a
polaroid camera with a time exposure as they bounced then plot a
histogram of velocities and obtain a maxwell boltzman distribution.

At the Exploratorium kids of all ages love to watch the balls bounce.
