Of course the problem here is that (at least at some schools) the football
and basketball programs can actually make money and may even partially fund
some of the other athletics which clearly do not. There is also the alumni
fund raising aspect. If you are not at a BIG athletic institution, you may
not know about things like--alumni must contribute a certain amount each
year to be eligible to be in the lottery for football tickets (Notre Dame
So, while many of us teaching, especially teaching science see little value
in these bloated, self-important, socially destructive athletic programs,
fat chance (LOL) any school administration (at least at big schools) will
see it 'our' way.!
