Funny you should say that -- just the other day I came across the

It's about how the Icelandic island of Heimaey saved their harbor
from being cut off by lava flows using (glorified) garden hoses.

The seawater pumping operation cost about $1.5 million back in
1973, and left behind about a quarter million tons of salt.
