I claim that we are still on topic because we are surrounded by students,
more than 98% of whom are thinking non-violently, but we need to be able to
detect when one is indeed on a potentially violent path, or at least we need
to understand more about the so-called mental illness that will drive a
small number of them to violence. My theory is that if more of us (really)
understand more there will be less of such violence.

I have read 42 books variously dealing with so-called mental illness, and
the (mostly psychiatrist) writers I respect the most have been the ones who
have declared that mental illness actually does not exist and have declared
that mental illness usually has concrete reasons, usually arising from
within the family of origin. All of them urge the direct and humane dealing
with the individual's actual problems in lieu of the using of significant
amounts of psychotropic drugs as is the predominant "treatment of choice"
these days. All of them seriously question mainstream treatment. Of course!
Of course, the Establishment will do negative reporting on individuals doing
work which would "hurt the business." In the interest of improving
understanding I will say that the related 1000-word book reviews that I have
posted on Amazon.com, among those of other reviewers, are the following
(and, yes there is considerable controversy, and this will be an opportunity
for you to hone your skills at sorting out those who understand from those
who do not, as well as those who do not have our own best interests at
heart.

4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8

&s=books&qid=1203099599&sr=1-3

And a book I have not read which exhaustively documents the sources of
mental illness as well as the compelling case for compassionate, informed
treatment in lieu of just prescribing drugs:

http://www.amazon.com/Truth-About-Mental-Illness-Choices/dp/075730107X/ref=s
r_1_2?ie=UTF8
&s=books&qid=1203099706&sr=1-2

(The long, negative, item linked below about Dr. Breggin was not balanced
with the much longer list of testimonies of persons who are grateful for his
work because of the great help it has brought their families. Read the
controversial reviews of his many books on Amazon.com and figure out for
yourself who is doing the greatest work.)

But, if you do not like Dr. Breggin's activist style, just read (as I have)
Jack Gorman's Essential Guide to Psychiatric Drugs, which he updates
regularly. Much of his advice about excess use of drugs correlates with the
wisdom of Dr. Breggin, but he does not anger the professionals so much.

Physics is a science.

As a science it must consider many sides of many different situations.

As a bit of a contrarian myself - I appreciate this reference on mind
altering drugs.

but for a rejoinder - may I suggest a review of it's author:
