If you are looking for something that is reasonably efficient and perhaps
linear in B vs I, you might select simple low-carbon steel. It is my
recollection that most cyclotron and beam handling magnets used this spec
for their magnets.

It is also reasonably easy to machine, if the necessity should arise.
