My understanding

The person on the ground is at zero potential
relative to the ground before getting on the
helicopter which is at the same potential.

If the helicopter and the person acquires any
charge in flight there will be zero potential
difference between the person and the helicopter.

When the person gets close to the high voltage
line, a pointed object is pointed at the line. The
spark indicates that charge is flowing to/from the
outside of the person and the helicopter depending
whether the wire will give electrons or need
electrons.

In time, the person, helicopter and wire have
identical potential (i.e. there is no potential
difference between them. Thus the person can move
from the helicopter with no additional flow of
electrons.

I would have liked to see a video of the
helicopter returning to pick up the person. I
would think a pointed object would have to be used
to bring them up to equal potential.

(I recall touching a hotel room door with my hand
on a cold winter day with my hand jumping due to
the muscle contraction. If I then repeated
touching the door with a coin between my fingers,
no muscle contraction occurred. What would happen
to the person's muscles if they pointed their
finger at the wire to reduce the potential
difference.)

Now when a bird lands on a high voltage wire,
changes will move until the bird and wire are at
the same potential. How many charges will move
from one to the other? Would not the surface area
of the bird be a factor? Do the pointed toes of
the bird come near the wire first resulting in a
small current, not one big zap? Do the feathers
provide an electrical insulation barrier to the
heart? Is the excess electrical charge on the
outside of the skin of the bird, or it feathers?

Now if I just had a high voltage wire in a cage
with a bird in it, what would I observe? If it was
dark, could I see, photograph a visible spark
discharge?
