Job Summary
Provides primary support and assistance for the operation of Physics
instructional laboratories and provides primary support for the
Physics department's IT and computer needs - software and hardware.
Maintains network of department instructional and research computers,
ensures updating, and provides instruction for its usage. Provides
technical assistance to faculty and advanced students engaged in
research projects. Designs, develops, constructs, and maintains,
catalogs, repairs and purchases laboratory and demonstration
equipment for the department's instructional program. Other duties as
assigned.
Essential Qualifications
Practical knowledge of and experience in maintaining mechanical and
electrical equipment, e.g. soldering, rudimentary machine shop
skills, small parts modeling, etc. Well-versed in computer networking
software (e.g. Windows NT; Windows XP); general office software;
elementary data acquisition and analysis software. Able to implement
interfaces with instructional experiments using, for example, IEEE,
RS-232, USB interfaces, etc.
Able to design demo laboratory experiments, and to store existing
demo laboratory equipment in a compact manner. Able to keep
inventory, keep maintenance logs, schedule experiments, purchase
parts, new equipment, etc.
Should have four years of experience providing instructional support
services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials
or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to
specialty area to which assigned. Or, have two years of college with
16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials,
supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to
which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required
experience. Or, have four years of college with 16 semester units in
courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment
and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned
may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of mechanics and electronics applicable to physics
and astronomy. Able to design demos based on material from department
book/internet used in teaching physics and astronomy courses, (e.g.
use of telescopes, power supplies, motion equipment, etc.)
Familiarity with electronic test equipment, vacuum equipment, machine
and electronic shop equipment. Willingness to train on CSUF network
systems -( e.g. via CSUF's available IT workshops).
License/ Certification
Valid California Drivers' License to be used to drive campus state
vehicles to collect equipment off-campus
Special Working Conditions
May be required to flex schedule to coincide with specific lower
division physics classes. May be asked to work with the CSUF Physics
Club. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a
fingerprint background check.
