Ugghhhh. I had some emails from Phil explaining all this. Of course that
was the last time I worked at NCSU and I don't think I have those old
emails. Alas, I will look, but don't hold your breath.

They were adapted from the Minnesota Demonstration Handbook compiled by Phil
Johnson. -- JZ

Perhaps Zig or Karl T. or someone else who was at the now famous 1988(?)
summer meeting when the PIRA 200 was born may know the details behind Phil's
choices for the choice of letters in the categories?

I do know that Phil Johnson intentionally left gaps to provide for room for
future growth. -- JZ

I and O were omitted I believe due to potential confusion with 1 and 0. I
imagine if ever needed for some expansion nowadays with better fonts, they
wouldn't be such a problem. (There also are neither 5I or 6I, similarly.
However, the University
of Maryland system of course uses all the letters up through P, I and O
included.)

1B was combined into 1A, as I recall... I often use 1B as a "placeholder"
locally for things I haven't indexed yet.

Not sure about 1P, but I think it also is a combined-into-something else, my
scratchy memory thinks that collisions might have not always been part of
1N. I do know there used to be a 1S for some of the items now in 1R,
properties of matter.
Crystal structures I think were originally in 1S.

Never have figured out 6Q. I know I once was using 4Q for comedy
demonstrations that weren't really physics... :D

Someone who was in the original Austin DCS meeting might recall exactly on
6Q.
