Don,

They're also great to show that glass becomes electrically conductive
when heated.

Bust off the outer shell.
Power it up through a variac to burn off the filament at whatever
rate you like.
Turn off the power.
Snip off the remaining filament support wires.
Now you've got a couple of wire leads embedded in the glass.
Turn up the power about 1/2 way.
Heat the tip of glass stem with a propane torch. Once it starts
glowing orange, the electrical current will begin heating it. Remove
the propane torch. If you keep the current low enough, you can get
this light to sustain itself for a minute or more before it melts
into a mound of glass gloop. If you crank the current up to full,
the wires will fry between the base and the glass junction. But the
glass will briefly glow yellow-white... or you will imagine that it
did in that black spot on your retina.
