Jerry -- are your sources alpha emitters in the way they're sealed?
For example, our Am-241 alpha source has an extremely thin gold
plating over it so that the alphas can get out. Even in air, the
range of MeV alphas is of the order of cm and 5.5 Mev alphas will not
penetrate paper. -- Wolfgang
