Hi Tappers

(Many of you may already know this, so apologies for any repetition.)

As part of an AAPT initiative in support of the advanced undergraduate
laboratory, a new listserv [advlabs-l] has just been launched. I would hop=
e
that it becomes as useful to its intended community as TAP-L is. I think
there is a lot of overlap between TAP-L and the new list, but I think the
new list might fill a significant need. I am not officially connected with
advlabs-l, but thought that many readers here would be interested, so am
passing the information on.

Below is the text from the listserv's announcement message. I think that
interested persons should be able to subscribe with little difficulty.

--------------
This is the listserv for faculty interested in the advanced undergraduate
physics laboratory. This list is administered by Harvey Leff (
hsleff@csupomona.edu).

Hello,

Welcome to the AAPT's new listserv on Advanced Physics Labs.

Your email address has been added to the subscriber list of AAPT's new
listserv. This is either because of a recommendation by your department
chair or other person, or by your own request.

The purpose of the listserv is to facilitate communication between people
who teach or are otherwise interested in undergraduate advanced physics
laboratories. We know that many people teach such labs, often in isolated
environments. Hopefully, this listserv will foster improved teaching by the
sharing of information on successes and failures, and will bring a sense of
community to teachers of advanced labs.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION ON ADVANCED PHYSICS LABS REGARDING PARTICULAR
EXPERIMENTS, SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT, CURRICULUM MATTERS, OR SOMETHING ELSE
RELEVANT TO THE ADVANCED LAB?

DO YOU WISH TO SHARE INFORMATION ON ONE OR MORE EXPERIMENTS YOU'VE DEVELOPE=
D
OR MODIFIED, ON AN ADVANCED LAB COURSE YOU TEACH, OR A NOTABLE PIECE OF
EQUIPMENT?

WHAT MATERIAL WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ON THE WEBPAGE FOR ADVANCED PHYSICS LABS
THAT WILL BE INITIATED BY AAPT?

Please direct your questions and share your ideas by writing to

advlabs-l@lists.aapt.org

Once discussions begin, the Advanced Physics Labs listserv is likely to tak=
e
on a life of its own. Enjoy!

Best wishes,
Harvey

LISTSERV INFORMATION

Yes, "listserv" is the correct spelling! AAPT's listservs use LYRIS softwar=
e
to broadcast messages via the World Wide Web.

Any message sent to the listserv is automatically broadcast to all
subscribers. At present there are over 790 subscribers.

=95 You can send messages to: advlabs-l@lists.aapt.org

=95 You will receive messages to the listserv by email and also can read
messages at

http://lists.aapt.org/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=3Dadvlabs-l

Note: the last letter in advlabs-l is a lower case L (for "list"). If you
wish to unsubscribe from this listserv, you can do so at the latter site.

YOU CAN SET YOUR E-MAIL PREFERENCES TO MEET YOUR NEEDS:

1. No e-mail: You can elect to subscribe to the listserv without receiving
any e-mail from it. This will allow you to read messages using your
newsgroup or Web browser (see below), and you will still be allowed to post
messages to the group. To activate this option, send an e-mail to
lyris@lists.aapt.org with the message, "set advlabs-l nomail".

2. If you change your e-mail setting to "nomail" and decide to change it
back, send an email to lyris@lists.aapt.org with the message, "set listname
mail".

3. E-mail digest: This option allows you to receive only one e-mail each da=
y
with all of that day's messages included in it. To subscribe to the digest,
send an e-mail to lyris@lists.aapt.org with the message, "set advlabs-l
digest".

YOU CAN READ AND POST MESSAGES IN ANY OF THREE WAYS:

=95 Via e-mail: You will receive emails in your inbox, unless you elect not=
to
as in item 3 above, and can read and respond as desired. New messages shoul=
d
be sent to

advlabs-l@lists.aapt.org

=95 Via the World Wide Web: Type

http://lists.aapt.org/cgi-bin/lyris.pl?enter=3Dadvlabs-l

to access the list's messages in your Web browser. This option is especiall=
y
useful if you are away from your own computer or you don't have e-mail
access but you need to participate in the list's discussion.

=95 Via newsgroup: Type news://advlabs-l.aapt.org into your Web browser (IF=
it
supports newsgroups). This will pull up your default News Browser, usually =
a
program such as Internet Explorer, Netscape News (part of the Communicator
Suite), or Agent. You can read the messages from your list and respond much
as you would read and respond to e-mails, without overloading your e-mail
inbox.

REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU REPLY TO MESSAGES:

When you reply to a post, hitting the REPLY button will send your reply to
EVERY subscriber. If you wish to reply ONLY to the author of the message,
remember to start a NEW message with the author's email in the "To:" field.
