Subject: photon counter

Post:

For the world year of physics I want to make a simple photon counter.

My idea is to have a wand that a museum visitor will point at different
brightness regions of the museum and then hear clicking of counted photons.
Rapid clicking for bright light and less rapid clicking for dim. Sort of
like a geiger counter for photons. (I used a small pinhole and large
neutral density filter to reduce the light intensity a lot!)

I built one a long time ago using a photomultiplier, but it was too fragile.

Does any one have experience with or knowledge of a simple solid state
photon counting detector/amplifier?

Thanks

Paul D
