I have one of these below; the Weird Sci. Salon bought them during a big
christmas sale at Big-5:

They supposedly have about 3000x optical gain in the visible range... or
cover the lens with a couple of layers of Congo Blue filter gel to convert
them into IR only. But in a totally dark room they see nothing. The tube
is like a one-stage photomultiplier, there's a focussed electron stream
going from emitter to phosphor (turning the image upside down as it
focuses through a point,) and if you wave a magnet near the thing, the
green image in the eyepiece goes crazy.
