Gary, replace the top sheet of plastic and buff out the bottom with
Crest toothpaste you'll be surprised how good it will turn out [you can
use 600grit wet/dry paper for the bad spots first].
I did it with mine several years back. As for missing needles
students can iterate over a small area.
[Sorry Pasco] but their compass display is nowhere near as good as
the older unit you have. I purchased a replacent several years ago 
from Frey Sci, but they have stopped supplying them too.
Maybe I should build some of this obsolete but good stuff in retirement,
