Subject: homemade laser?

My chemistry colleague mentioned about a "tonic water" laser that he read
in a magazine while in grad school. He said that the quinine in the tonic
water was the lasing medium in the cavity with laser mirrors at each end.
(Quinine is a naturally fluorescent material.) It somehow got excited with
a light source. Anyone ever heard of this idea?
