I just noticed this hand-cranked VandeGraaff machine on ebay:

Wow, as I kid I would have saved my allowance for decades to have one of
those. Or perhaps sold a younger sibling!

I wonder if the metal sphere is actually just aluminized plastic. If so,
then the total price could be under $20. If someone came out with these
today, I wonder if the'd sell. Give each student their own VDG. Or would
fried gameboys and calculators cause lawsuits?
