The rubber band method does work. I have had my students use two of the same
tuning forks, put a rubber band over one of the prongs of one of the forks and
listen to them. I also have an oscilliscope program on my computer and they are
able to see the beats graphically on the computer. The students can play around
by moving the rubberband up and down on the prong and find how it changes the
frequency of the fork.
