Subject: Re: 3rd Grade

One fun (though chemistry-leaning) activity that I have done with this age group involves mixing level teaspoons of calcium chloride (available this time of year as a de-icer), baking soda, and a dilute solution of the indicator bromthymol blue in Zip-Loc baggies. First, the students mix one level teaspoon of all three of them together in a baggie and make observations. Then they attempt to identify which chemicals are necessary to achieve the temperature change, color change, and gas evolution by mixing two of the chemicals at a time. Every time I have done this activity, the kids have gotten VERY excited (and at this age level, they still like to wear safety goggles!).
