Dave, no joke, your looking for steel balls EH!!!!
I just built a rather weird newtons cradle with different mass balls [for
impedance matching demo]
I used 50mm steel bearing from a bearing house. Drilling was simple just
chuck them up in the lathe and use a carbide bit!
The cool part was the tapered holes and matching pins for adjusting the
balls as they wander out of alignment.
I have seen balls to 75mm in dia for sale just check the web. Zig
