It was always the case that horseshoe magnets were stored wearing
'keepers' which bridged the poles with an iron path.
The motivation was to retain their potency.
With thin ceramic magnets, providing a low reluctance path
is more problematic, I expect.
(Not that I have solid evidence that this is effective, even...)
