Speed of Sound in a Metal
Description: With this set-up, you will measure the speed of sound in one of the long aluminum PASCO tracks. A microphone is place at one end of the track. When you strike the other end of the track with a metal rod, it not only makes a sound, but it also completes an electric circuit that triggers Data Studios to begin recording sound from the microphone. The plot showing the time of trigger and the time when the sound reached the microphone can then be displayed on the projector.
Parts: Microphone, wires, metal rod, long Pasco track, laptop, Pasco interface box.
