Jensen Steam Engine

Description: The steam engine runs on steam pressure made by heating water in a boiler the same way water is boiled in a tea kettle. The first practical steam engines were built about 1700 and were used to pump water. Over the years steam engines where built to operate many types of equipment from autos, such as the Stanley Steamer, to farm tractors, trains and ships. The steam engine reached its peak use around 1900.

Instructions: Open the whistle to vent air. Remove safety valve and pour water (preferably warm or hot) into boiler until gauge glass shows 1/2 to 2/3 full. Check level by lifting one end of boiler so as to actuate water in boiler. When water again is steady, glass will show correct level. Replace safety valve, making sure washer is in place. Steam pressure will develop after several minutes as indicated by water or steam appearing at the exhaust or whistle. Rotate the flywheel to start. When water disappears in gauge glass turn off current.

Hazards: Relieve boiler pressure through whistle before removing safety valve to fill boiler.
