Description: A piece of nickel and brass have connected at one end. When heat is applied to the junction, a small electric potential difference is produced.
Instructions: Turn the hot plate on to a high heat (~300 deg F). Allow the hot plate a few minutes to heat up. Put the voltmeter on the mV setting and connect the wires from the meter to the thermocouple. Place the thermocouple in contact with the hot plate. Obviously, the thermocouple will get hot quickly, so you can hold the wires connected to the thermocouple without burning yourself. The meter should read 1-3 mV.
Hazards: The hot plate and thermocouple are very hot!
