Howitzer on an Incline
Description: This demonstration shows the independance of hozizontal motion (the cart) and vertical motion (the ball's path) of a single system in a slightly different way than 1D60.10
Instructions: The Howitzer is attached to a Dynamics Cart. The track is inclined. The ball is shot perpendicular to the track when the cart passes a photogate trigger. The ball will land back in the cart. This result is not intuitive without a careful analysis of the freebody diagrams for the cart and the ball. It is most instructive to make the x-axis parallel to the incline, and then the diagrams will show that the x-component of the velocity and the acceleration is the same for the ball and cart. Thus, they will travel the same distance down the incline for a given time.
Hazards: Keep an eye on the ball. It sometimes forgets the physics principles involved and misses the cart.
