Damped Harmonic Oscillator with Position Plot

Description: A cart is placed on an air track and springs are connected to the cart on both ends so that it oscillates back and forth. A mechanical driver is attached to one spring to force oscillations, and a position sensor is connected to a laptop running Data Studios to plot the position of cart as a function of time.

Instructions: Turn the air blower on to about level 3.5 to allow the cart to move with minimal friction. Run the driver by turning on the DC power supply and adjust the voltage to find the resonant frequency of the system. Press Start in Data Studios to view the position of the cart as a function of time.

Turn the voltage to the driver off to see the damped oscillations. Damping can be increased by turning the blower down to around the 2 level. Adjust the blower a little above and below the 2 level to see different degrees of damping.
