Combustion Cannon
# 4B60.701

Description: A bottle with a rubber stopper has 2 bolts that extend through opposite sides of a bottle. The bolts extend inside the bottle with a gap of about 1 inch inside the bottle. One bolt is connected to the grounding plug on the Van De Graf generator, and the other bolt is connected to the hand-held sphere. When the hand-held sphere is touched to the Van de Graaff, a spark is produced between the bolts that will ignite the vapors in the bottle and pop the cork with a loud bang. note: same demo as 5A50.301

Instructions: Pour a small amount (~1/2 cap full) of methanol or ethanol into the bottle. Cork the bottle, but not too tightly. The tighter you cork the bottle, the bigger the explosion! Swirl the liquid in the bottle a little to release the vapors. Be sure to use the safety glasses, and point the bottle toward the ceiling or a wall, not toward the students or yourself! Touch the hand-held metal sphere to the Van de Graaff to make the vapor explode.

Hazards: EXCESS FLUID, ESPECIALLY THE METHANOL, CAN CAUSE THE EXPLOSION TO BECOME VERY LOUD AND DANGEROUS.

DON'T PUSH THE CORK ON TOO TIGHT. YOU DON'T WANT THE BOTTLE TO EXPLODE!

CAREFUL WHERE YOU POINT THE CORK.
