Charge From a 10 kV Power Supply

Description: A wire with a series of resistors is connected to a 10 kV DC power supply. When the power supply is turned on, one end of the wire has an electric potential of -5 kV and a negative net charge, the other end has a potential of +5 kV and a positive net charge, and the middle has a potential of 0 V and zero net charge.

The net charge can be shown by hanging a piece of foil near the wire. When the foil is neutral, it will be attracted to the two charged ends of the wire. When the foil touches one end of the wire, the foil then becomes charged and is repelled from that end of the wire, and is attracted to the other end of the wire.

Hazards: Be very careful not to touch the live wire when the power supply is on. Also, the wire leads from the power supply to the wire are not rated for 5 kV, so some current will leak through the wire leads.
