Faraday's Ice Pail (large)

Description: When the washtub is charged, excess charges will move to the outside of the washtub, and the inside of the washtub will remain neutral.

Instructions: Place the washtup on top of the box and position it so that it is in constant contact with the Van De Graaff generator, as shown in the picture. Turn on the Van De Graaff generator to charge the washtup. (You may leave the Van De Graaff running to insure that the tub stays charged). Use the small hand-held sphere and rub it around the inside of the wash tub. Allow students to hear that the sphere is making contact. Now touch the sphere to the electroscope to show that there is no net charge on the sphere. Make sure that the electroscope is not too close to the Van De Graaff generator, or it will become charged via ions in the air.

Remove excess charge from the electroscope and the sphere by touching them with your hand. Touch the sphere to the outside of the washtub, and then touch the sphere to the electroscope again. This time, the electroscope will show that the sphere is charged.

Please ground the washtub when finished.
